Ok so the draft didn’t have the wheeling and dealing of past drafts but several teams made out well and a few left us scratching our heads.
The boldest play of the weekend had the NYJ sacrificed the Lion’s share of their draft for 2 players, first sending Cleveland picks number 17 and 52 along with defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff and safety Abram Elam for the 5th pick where they drafted USC QB Mark Sanchez. On day two Mike Tannenbaum was at it again giving up their 3rd, 4th and 7th round picks to the Lions for RB Shonn Greene. A lot of people see these as bold moves but really they are desperate moves by a desperate GM. Something tells me Rex Ryan will be in NY longer than Mike Tannenbaum will.
When you compare the Pre-Draft Super Bowl Odds there weren’t any big movers; the biggest move came back on the 2nd of April when the Bears acquired Jay Cutler from the Broncos. The trade moved the Bears Super Bowl Odds from 40/1 to 25/1.
Looking over the draft several AFC teams earned solid marks.
The Patriots – The Pats had a typical Pats draft, they moved out of the first round, they loaded up on players who will begin as backups and work their way into the system.
The Ravens – Baltimore picked up OT Michael Oher and DE Paul Kruger with their first two picks, everything else was gravy.
The Chiefs – The Scott Pioli Chiefs draft strategy didn’t waver much from the Scott Pioli Patriots draft strategy, they reached a little for Tyson Jackson but you can’t deny he fit in very well on the Chiefs D-line in the mold of the Pats Richard Seymour.
The Lions – The Lions took Matt Stafford. Say what you will about the huge salary but Stafford is an excellent pick for a team that hasn’t had much to boast about for a long time. Fellow 1st round Brandon Pettigrew gives Stafford a short out and will make the transition to the NFL a lot easier. The Defense wasn’t addressed but after a 0-16 season, not all the holes could be filled in a single draft.
The Cardinals – The Cards picked up Chris Wells in the first round, he doesn’t seem like an obvious fit but add a pounding runner to an all out aerial assault give Arizona options.
The Falcons – Atlanta made their move earlier in the week trading next years 2nd rounder to the Chiefs for future hall of fame Tight End Tony Gonzalez. Matt Ryan’s Completion percentage just got a whole lot better.
The most surprising move of the draft, well when I say surprising I mean down right puzzling. The Oakland Raiders bypassed Stud WR Michael Crabtree and picked up speedster Darrius Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey is fast but he has trouble holding onto the ball. Last time I checked catching the ball is somewhat important when you are an NFL Wide Receiver. The Beneficiaries of Al Davis’ love of track stars was their bay area counterparts the San Francisco 49ers who quickly snapped up Crabtree. The 49ers have lacked a stud wide out since the loss of Terrell Owens.
