Most of the sportbook focus this weekend will be on the Belmont Stakes betting and the French Open Finals odds but there will also be plenty of good baseball action. Let’s take a look at what the National League West will be up to.
San Francisco Giants @ Florida Marlins
Don’t look now but the San Francisco Giants are a respectable team. Don’t look now, but the Florida Marlins are not.
The Giants started the season 3-8 but are 22-17 since. Meanwhile, the Marlins started the season 11-1 but are 14-28 since.
San Francisco has played much better at home (18-9) than on the road (7-16) but the same is the case for the Marlins, who don’t take advantage of their home field.
The Marlins will face Barry Zito, Jonathan Sanchez and Tim Lincecum in this series. The Marlines should be able to capitalize on the two lefties they face as they are 12-6 against left-handed starters this season.
Friday: Barry Zito (1-6) vs Chris Volstad (4-4)
Saturday Jonathan Sanchez (2-4) vs Andrew Miller (1-2)
Sunday: Tim Lincecum (4-1) vs Anibal Sanchez (1-4)
Monday: TBC vs Sean West (0-1)
Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Diego Padres
No one really has any explanation why the San Diego Padres are playing so well but they have seemingly cooled off after an inexplicable, unexpected 10-game win streak. They are just 2-6 since that streak and back to having problems manufacturing runs.
The Padres have averaged just 3.5 runs per game in their last six losses, which isn’t going to cut it on a day-to-day basis.
The good news for the Padres is that they are at home in this series and they have dominated at Petco Park. They are 17-9 at home and just 8-19 on the road. The Padres should be favored on the MLB odds in most of these matchups so look for a split or better in this series from them.
Friday: Doug Davis (2-6) vs Chad Gaudin (2-3)
Saturday: Max Scherzer (2-4) vs Josh Geer (1-1)
Sunday: Billy Buckner (2-1) vs Jake Peavy (5-6)
Monday: Dan Haren (4-4) vs Kevin Correia (1-4)
Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers
Two division leaders meet up at Chavez Ravine in what should be a very interesting clash. At 19-6, the Phillies are the best road team in all of baseball and at 20-6, the Dodgers are the best home team in the Majors.
The Dodgers have the decided advantage in pitching in this series as Eric Milton, Hiroki Kuroda and Randy Wolf are a combined 6-2 while the Phillies three weekend starters, Jamie Moyer, Joe Blanton and Antonio Bastardo, are combined 9-8.
The Phillies are 13-4 against left-handed starters, though, and including the Thursday matchup against Clayton Kershaw, they will face three lefties this weekend. The MLB odds favor them to win at least two of the three weekends games.
Friday: Jamie Moyer (4-5) vs Eric Milton (2-0)
Saturday: Joe Blanton (4-3) vs Hiroki Kuroda (1-1)
Sunday: Antonio Bastardo (1-0) vs Randy Wolf (3-1)
